好食到飛起 vs. 難食到嘔

Today, I trekked all the way to J-Town from work to pick up some green wasabi tobikko but to my dismay, the former fish market moved and the new one didn't carry any. What they did carry was mentaiko 明太子 at approximately $7.50 per slab (about 3-4 inch piece) and UNI!! As I haven't had uni in a while, I decided to pick up a tray for dinner. Just looking at the trays and trays of uni made my mouth water. I ended up choosing a tray that looked fresh and decent.

So after picking up some mooncakes at T&T and driving home, I anxiously waited while the sushi rice cooked and cooled. I carefully laid the uni on top of the seasoned sushi rice and eagerly dug in. Doesn't it look good?

People weren't kidding when they say looks can be deceiving. I don't think I've had uni that tasted this bad in a very very long time! No, it wasn't spoiled, it tasted muddy. Yep, felt like I was spooning in mouthfuls of mud. Quite yucky if you ask me. I think I might have had two pieces that actually tasted like uni. Boy what a disappointment.

I recall one of my favourite TVB food-related dramas "A Recipe For The Heart 美味天王" where 關詠荷 and 古天樂 had to make curry chicken on rice for a competition. The scoring was 好食到停唔到口、好食到飛起、好食到痺. There was also a score of 難食到嘔. Well, I think my uni rice scored the latter. =(

Moles Whacked!

What's summer's end without a trip to the CNE? This year, the garbage-eating, mole-whacking, air show-watching 7-hour day was spent with 文生, Peggy, Edwin and 太上文太. We managed to find free parking on King Street and got down to the CNE grounds at around noon. The airshow promptly started at 1:00pm but I'm not much of a fan.

I am a fan of WHACK-A-MOLE!!

I haven't whacked moles in too many years! Every time I tell people I'm a mole-whacking champion, no one ever believes me. Of course not until I win. Haha! Well, this year, I had to whack twice because I got a little rusty =p but here is my prize!!

After the mole-whacking, some bowling ball-rolling and some ice cream waffle-eating, we headed over to Ontario Place to check out this year's Lantern Festival. They're pretty but not quite as nice as the first year's. We were going to stay for the lights to come on, but we all got too tired. We left around 7:30pm and headed to Congee Queen for dinner and of course since I was so hungry, ordered a whole table full of food!

Scallops in a Half Shell, Scallop Power!

文生 and I saw some live scallops today at 兆豐 and since I was craving them since 雲景樓 two weeks ago (they are $7.50 plus tax EACH), I bought four of them to make at home! The four scallops cost:

Yes, four (4) of them cost that much

Ooooh, they were soooo good! Fresh scallops are so good. Fresh anything is good actually.

So we were wondering what we should have with our scallops and we thought: T-bone steak! Surf and turf! So off we go to Dominion to pick up two t-bone steaks that we threw on the BBQ downstairs. Did I mention the two 16oz t-bones cost less than the scallops? So with a little bit of salad, our dinner looked like this:

To get a feel for how big these things were, this is me and my gimongous scallop:

Project Melon

After 2 hours of pure agony installing PS CS3, I finally got a chance to try it out. I made my first attempt at editing a photo I took a few weeks ago at Meishan's.

I named it "Keeping Warm"... 有冇 feel 呀?

Hong Kong Trip 2003

I went on my first trip to Hong Kong by myself in December 2003. It was a wonderful experience as I haven't been back to this place since my first exposure in December 1990. When people say Hong Kong changes overnight, they're not kidding. If I wasn't such a TVB junkie, I wouldn't have been able to recognize anything! I was excited as hell since I purchased my ticket in October and I was thinking "I gotta go visit all those places that I see in all those TVB dramas!!"

When I go on trips I tend to do a lot of research prior to departure so I can make the most out of my time away. Well, visiting a city of my dreams was of course no exception! I must have taken 2 inches of printed notes with me, all filled with places to see, things to eat, shopping etc etc. I wanted to see as much of Hong Kong in the 3 weeks as I possibly can. Well, I think I did it because some people tell me I've been to more places than some of the locals that live there. LOL!

Somehow, memories of my first visit to Hong Kong always reminds me of a conversation I had with 卅蚊. "When you go to Hong Kong, let me know and I can bring you around!" Um...thanks, but no thanks. While I do not doubt that 卅蚊 knows Hong Kong as he goes there to visit his relatives about once a year, I do not believe I can't find my way around Hong Kong myself. After all, I have an advantage over him: I can speak, read and write Chinese and he can't...so blah! So no, I am not your typical CBC (hence the title of my blog ^.^).

I pulled out my HK trip diary the other day and decided to electronically save my entries just in case I lose it or want to access it remotely. Well, and the fact that I have nothing better to do at work may account for some of it. I'd have to scan photos in for the entries though and I am NOT looking forward to it. No, I'm not lazy, just don't have a scanner that's compatible with XP that's all.
